Soderstrom Scholars Fund Announces 3rd Cohort of STEM Scholars

NEW HAVEN, Conn. December 16, 2025 — The Soderstrom Scholars Fund (SSF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting underrepresented students pursuing STEM degrees at Connecticut colleges, is proud to announce its 2025 cohort of Soderstrom Scholars. Five students from Connecticut institutions were selected for their academic excellence, resilience, and commitment to improving their communities.

“These scholars represent the extraordinary range of talent driving the future of STEM,” said Jon Soderstrom, namesake of the SSF. “Their interests—from environmental chemistry to neuroscience to advanced computing—reflect the breadth of innovation happening in Connecticut and beyond. Their promise inspires tremendous confidence in the next generation of scientific and technological leadership in our state.”

The 2025 Soderstrom Scholars are:

  • Maritza Sanchez, CT State Community College — Chemistry major with plans to pursue graduate study in environmental chemistry.

  • Christopher White, University of Connecticut — Computer Science major focused on software engineering and community mentorship.

  • Wesly Rivera Nazario, Connecticut College — Biological Sciences & Neuroscience major, aspiring to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

  • Kevin Concepcion, Southern Connecticut State University — Computer Science major, developing skills in programming and systems design.

  • Tori Walsh, Albertus Magnus College — Biology major and future medical school applicant, is driven by her rural upbringing and athletic background.

“We’re very excited to welcome this 3rd cohort,” said Michelle McQueen, Executive Director of SSF. “SSF stands apart because we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. We get to know each scholar personally and tailor mentoring, internships, and professional development not only to their academic goals but also to what’s happening in their lives—whether that means taking a semester break, navigating family responsibilities, becoming a parent, or managing unexpected challenges. It’s an honor to support them holistically as they define their own futures in STEM.”

SSF supports students through three pillars: mentoring, scholarships, and internships and training opportunities. Its Board of Directors and Advisory Council include leaders from Yale, UConn, the Connecticut Department of Education, BioCT, Pfizer, Connecticut Innovations, Evolveimmune, Halda Therapeutics, and other key industry stakeholders.

“Our partners are essential to making this work possible,” says David Scheer, Board Chair of the Soderstrom Scholars Fund. “Their commitment enables us to provide not only financial support, but more importantly, the mentorship and real-world experiences that can truly change trajectories for these students. We’re deeply grateful for the organizations and individuals who stand with us—and we look forward to welcoming new supporters who share our belief in expanding opportunity in STEM across Connecticut.”
